American composer Lou Harrison's music is original and sometimes exotic but never esoteric, forbidding, or severe. Drawing on an array of non-Western and pre-Baroque influences, it confounds conventional "classical music" expectations. It asks that we listen with open ears and an open mind. No special preparation is required-just a willingness to "switch channels."
