Carleton College, Gould Library?documentary and social art photography exhibit: Portraits of Home: Families in Search of Shelter in Greater Minnesota opens Sept. 12 at Gould Library.

Portraits of Home has been selected by A.C.T.- Acting in the Community Together-as their 20th Anniversary Exhibition. A.C.T. is a student community service organization established in 1985 to offer challenging and rewarding volunteer programs for Carleton students.

The exhibition displays 25 of 55 photos, sponsored by the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, and features the work of six distinguished photojournalists who have captured the deeply personal impacts of greater Minnesota?s affordable housing crisis.
The show reveals the challenges faced by Minnesota?s lowest income families as they manage life and work with less than decent housing conditions. ?By putting a face on these conditions we hope to bring these stories to light,? said Warren Hanson, president of Greater Minnesota Housing Fund. ?Most of the time these conditions go unseen, the stories are unheard, and so the needs of children and their families are unaddressed by public policy.?
Photos are accompanied by brief narrative text that describes the compelling and heartwarming stories behind the photos.

Contributing photographers ? several of whom have received regional and national awards ? include Ben Garvin of the St. Paul Pioneer Press; Carlos Gonzalez, Stormi Greener and Brian Peterson of the Star Tribune; Twin Cities freelancer and homeless advocate Cathy ten Broeke and Grand Forks Herald photographer Eric Hylden.

Portraits of Home will be on display at Gould Library through November 28.
There is no charge for admission.
