Portraits and Society: From
Impressionism to Cubism

Portraits are never just records of the appearance of an individual; they carry within their artistic gestures meaning about the people they represent and about the social, cultural, and political worlds for which they were made. This series looks at portraits from an unusual time, when revolutions in artistic representation matched enormous changes in the social and political structure of Europe and in the place and identity of the artist.
