Poor Man’s Boogie is Daniel Wilkins’ sixth full-length premiere under the auspices of DASSdance (formerly danielandsomesuperfriends)—his athletic and no-holds-barred company of eight dancers. Wilkin’s newest project is as ambitious as ever, with a multi-media approach integrating DASS’ signature eclectic and explosive dance style called All-Terrain Dance, music ranging between old jazz, Pacific Delta Blues, and contemporary hip-hop, original film elements, black-and-white photography, and personal testimonials to explore the social conditions of poverty in the US today.

With outrageous irreverence that teeters between farce and tragedy, DASS explores the confinement of the lower class within a relentless cycle of hunger, powerlessness, and violence. Hardship and struggle mingle with and motivate desperate schemes to climb the social ladder. Dependency and lack of social support are frictions exploding in outbursts of resentment and abuse. Wilkins paints a world where individuals are squeezed to the breaking point, and it is only in these tightest of places where creativity and vigor break through.

Warning: Poor Man’s Boogie contains adult language, mild adult content, and intense situations that may not be suitable for some children.
