Policy and Design for Housing: Lessons of the Urban Development Corporation, 1968-1975.

An exhibition demonstrating past and current housing programs for people of limited income. The exhibition will document one of the most innovative and effective housing programs developed in the US. The New York State Urban Development Corporation, launched by Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and headed by Edward J. Logue, was given broad powers and financial resources to "improve the physical environment for low- and moderate-income families." The UDC built 33,000 units of housing and three new communities that are still in existence today.

The MIT exhibition will document the UDC legacy and its effectiveness. In view of the current shortage of affordable housing and expiring government subsidies, this exhibition contributes to our understanding of the importance of planning and design in obtaining social goals in housing. Sponsored by School of Architecture and Planning.

Opening Reception--Sept 21, 5:30-7:30pm. Wolk Gallery (Rm 7-338). Weekdays 9-5pm. 617/258-9106 (7/26/06)
