September brings two rich and delicious voices to Chepstow - as On the Border welcomes Penelope Shuttle and Jeremy Hooker two poets of hard earned wisdom and gracious humanity.
Penelope Shuttle has written over thirty collections, novels and other works including the acclaimed Redgrove's Wife which both celebrated and mourned the loss of her husband, the poet Peter Redgrove. Her poems are alive with elemental imagery while her subject matter is firmly rooted in motherhood, loss and the struggles of the everyday. Her extraordinary grasp of breath and speech as the root of poetry is apparent in her immediate and authentic readings.
Jeremy Hooker's voice is equally resonant - of man's struggle to get back in alignment and harmony with nature and to find a place of belonging. His taut and yet fluid poems are filled with the imagery of nature, water, freedom and the environment but he is more that a simple 'poet of place'. He is one of the few poets at present to have made the difficult transition from 'doing' to 'being' while still asking those important questions that turn a poet into a philosopher.
Join us then for an autumnal feast of imagery and ideas as two brilliant speakers of their poems come together for an evening of elegant, emotional and frankly delicious poetry.
