Soho Square
West End, England

To celebrate Mashable’s 2nd annual Social Media Day this Thursday 30th June and as a bit of light relief from a drab lunchtime, we thought we’d indulge in a spot of social planking. The phenomenon – also known to diehard fans as extreme lying down – is spreading like wildfire on via Facebook and Twitter.

The aim of the craze is to share pictures online of yourself laying face down, hands by your sides in the most unusual locations, all via social media. Gordon Ramsey and tennis pro Laura Robson have been joining in by tweeting pics on Ramsay’s yacht, and Robson overlooking the courts at Wimbledon this week.

Check out the video for a glimpse of the action:

Embracing the spirit of planking and all that’s great about social media, we’re inviting you down to Soho Square at 1:13pm (lunchtime) Thursday 30th June for a social plank of epic flash-mob proportions. As far as we know there’s been no official attempt at a Planking World Record and being the high hitters we are, we want to set one and it’s your job to help us.

There’ll be treats on hand for all those taking part, along with the accolade of being crowned Absolute Planker 2011 for the most inventive location around Soho Square on the day.

Make sure you spread the love using #SMDay and follow these three simple steps:

Turn up, check in (via Facebook places) and plank out.

See you on Thursday!
