PIXEL & FRIENDS, created by Kim Carpenters and Alyssa Rothwell, will be premiering at Sydney’s
Powerhouse Museum from Tuesday 1 April to Sunday 27 April for two shows daily. This must-see
school holiday event will take youngsters on an absorbing and vivid journey through the colour
spectrum-told in dance, live music and digital animation.
PIXEL & FRIENDS is an original story and concept by multi-award-winning Theatre of Image
Director/Designer Kim Carpenter and developed with a team of artists-Alyssa Rothwell & Sharon
Sanders, Digital Animation; Peter Kennard, Composer; and Narelle Benjamin, Choreographer. It is
a beautiful tale- a celebration of the joy and beauty of colour and the enormous emotional power it
plays in our lives.
“The piece really represents Theatre of Image itself”, Carpenter said. “Its saying: all the arts are
brothers, and we can have all those qualities of texture and space and rhythm and balance and
harmony and lights, all in music as well as through kinetic movement in dance and digital art, and colour
is everything”.
The central character is PIXEL –a coloured square- the smallest amount of colour on a computer. Pixel
has lost her colour. Sad and lost in space she meets LINE……..who can take us anywhere we choose to
go. He takes PIXEL on an amazing global tour of the colour spectrum to find her colour. Together they
travel through different coloured worlds from cool to warm. They meet new friends-Contrast, Shape,
Form, Texture, Space and Rhythm.
PIXEL is played by Dancer, Kristina Chan. LINE is played by Dancer, Tim Ohl. Both are former
principal dancers with Australian Dance Theatre. Kristina has just starred in Tanya Liedtke’s last work
Construct for The Sydney Festival. Tim has just returned form an international tour with Australian
Dance Theatre performing in London and Paris. Jeremy is a multi-talented musician. He is accomplished
percussionist and Playschool regular he recently toured with Genevieve Lemon in I Like to Sing.
