Piano recital: Lauryna Sableviciute March 2, 2011

It is an absolute pleasure to welcome for her first visit to Salford University, the brilliant pianist Lauryna Sableviciute. In this piano recital Lauryna will perform a mixed programme of Baroque, Romantic and Contemporary music by composers such as Scarlatti, Chopin and liszt. Also featured will be music from Lauryna's homeland, Lithuania.

About Lauryna

Lauryna began her piano studies at the age of 5, entering the M.K Ciurlionis School of Arts in Vilnius Lithuania, two years later, studying with Jurate Karosaite. She began to give public recitals at a very early age and by the time she was 15 had already accumulated many prizes and honours in various competitions including prestigious national awards from the Czech Republic and Lithuania.

She graduated from the Vilnius Conservatoire in 1998 after having studied with Professor Birute Vainiunaite. Since graduating she has given many recitals internationally as a piano soloist, as a chamber musician and as an accompanist. Some of her most memorable concerts would include theperforming of Vainiunas' Piano Concerto together with the National Philharmonic Orchestra ofLithuania in 1991 (at the age of 15); in 1997 playing Schumann's Piano Quintet Op.44 in E major with the Vilnius Quartet as part of the Young Talents of Lithuania season and in 1998 and performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 in B minor together with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Lithuania in the Philharmonic Hall in Vilnius (the last two of these performances were also broadcast on national radio).

Since completing her undergraduate studies she has attended many international piano masterclasses including: E. Bukojemska (Poland); PiIHsien Chen (Germany); H. Zahling (Germany);H. Scheker (Switzerland); D. Petrov (Russia); D. Merlet (France); D. Alexeev (Russia) and M. Tirimo(Greece).

Lauryna moved to Scotland in 1998 and won the Scholarship for Accompaniment from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) for two successive years (1998 and 1999). In 2000 she entered the RSAMD to study for her Master's in Music Performance, from where she graduated in 2003 having studied with Fali Pavri. In 2001 she won the RSAMD Governor's Recital Competition for Piano.

In addition to her interest in works from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, she is also actively involved in introducing audiences to new works by composers from around the world including world and/or UK premieres from the following: Ennio Morricone (Italy), Yuri Kasparov Russia), Eduardo Miranda (Brazil), Graciela Paraskevaidís (Uruguay), Senderovas (Lithuania) etc.

Possibly the recent highpoint of this activity was her giving the UK's first portrait concert of the music of Aldo Clementi (Italy) along with the flautist Roberto Fabbriciani during the Sonic Fusion Festival in Edinburgh in May 2006.

Early in 2006 she became a founder member of the Research Ensemble, a new ensemble located within the Higher Education Music sector in Scotland, to foster and develop new repertoire, but also to work collaboratively on new research projects beyond the 'normal' boundaries of music.

Since 2002, besides her work as a performer she continues to be in demand as a teacher (piano and performance) and accompanist for various institutions including the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (Glasgow) and the Douglas Academy Specialist Music School (Glasgow).
