A.C. Grayling's new book,'The God Argument', focusses on arguments against the existence of God, arguments against religion and arguments for 'humanism'. He wonders if these arguments withstand critical scrutiny; we shall ask this, and related, questions of his book. Are his major arguments valid or true? Are they cogent, coherent or compelling? And can 'humanism', conceived of broadly, provide a cogent explanation of the world (and of human experience), as well as a stable foundation for morality?
