There is much discussion and debate these days around the question of atheism and its central arguments and claims. Do these arguments and claims stand up, not only to rigorous logical and epistemological investigation, but also to an enduring challenge, that of agnosticism? We focus on a number of thinkers including the ancient Sceptics and Sophists, Hume and Kant, the Neo-Darwinians (such as Huxley and Spencer) and more recent contributors to the debate such as Russell, Ayer, JJC Smart, Paul Davies and Stephen Hawking. This course is a follow-up to 'Philosophical Investigations: God, Science, Logic and Atheism', however it is not necessary for participants to have first attended that course.
