City Arts & Lectures will present an evening with
Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman is well known for his dynamic portrayals of disparate roles. Virtually unrecognizable from one film to the next, Hoffman is unforgettable in every character he brings to life. A high school athlete who grew up in Rochester, New York, Hoffman turned to acting when he was sidelined by a wrestling injury. His characters have ranged from the transgender Rusty in "Flawless" to a male nurse in "Magnolia," an adult film star in "Boogie Nights," and Brandt, a chipper personal assistant in "The Big Lebowski." Hoffman's astounding performance in the biopic "Capote" has won him praise for revealing the nuances of Truman Capote's personality without falling into an impersonation of the eccentric writer's effete mannerisms. Hoffman's work on stage has matched his brilliant work on screen. He starred on Broadway in "Long Day's Journey into Night" and Sam Shephard's "True West," a performance that lead a New York Daily News critic to call Hoffman the most forceful actor of his generation. In addition to his impressive work as an actor, Hoffman directed "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" and is co-artistic director of LAByrinth Theater Company in New York City.
