'Philadelphia Gothic: Murders, Mysteries, Monsters, and Mayhem Inspire American Fiction, 1798-1854.' In the early 1800's, Philadelphia was one of the most genteel, urbane cities around. Despite this, the city spawned a literary tradition of dark, creepy tales of the supernatural. This exhibit explores that contradiction.
