Look out Philadelphia, There’s a New Mafia in Town

A group of independent artists and designers has formed the Philadelphia branch of the international Craft MafiaTM family. The Walnut Room will host the Philadelphia Craft Mafia’s inaugural event with a fashion show and bazaar on Tuesday, July 18th at 9pm.

Armed with sewing machines and business plans, eight local entrepreneurs have joined together to form the Philadelphia branch of the international Craft MafiaTM family. A fashion show featuring members of the Philly Roller Girls along with a bazaar showcasing the work of the founding members will be held at the Walnut Room on Tuesday, July 18th, at 9pm.

The Philadelphia Craft Mafia is a network of independent craft business owners with a common goal to provide an outlet for promotion and networking in Philadelphia’s thriving DIY community. The local organization represents a wide range of craft-related businesses, including jewelry design, embroidery, and weaving.

“We recognize the benefits of working as a group,” says Typhaney Bennett, founder of the Philadelphia Craft Mafia and creator of Typhaney B. Jewelry, “This organization is a great way to promote all of our work together, and to learn and grow as small business owners.”

The fashion show will begin at approximately 10:30pm, with pieces modeled by members of the Philly Roller Girls. Items from each founding member will be available for purchase throughout the evening and information about the group will be available for those interested in becoming a member. “There’s no shortage of talented designers and craftspeople in Philadelphia,” says Rachel Breeden, creator of Ladies Auxiliary Club, “we’re looking forward to expanding the group over the coming months and hosting events throughout the city.”

The Philadelphia-based group was inspired by the success of the original Craft MafiaTM in Austin, TX, whose members not only operate successful small businesses but have gone on to host several television shows on DIY Network. The Austin-based group originally came together through a shared love for craft, DIY ethics, and mutual respect.
