Candidates for Minnesota state Senate Tom Neuville and Jessica Peterson will be debating at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25 in Leighton Hall room 304 at Carleton College.

Peterson and Neuville will debate on higher education and student debt, energy and gas prices, health care, and other issues of particular interest to students. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Neuville is an attorney in Northfield and has represented the district in the state Senate for 16 years as a Republican.

Peterson, his Democratic challenger, is a 1998 graduate of Carleton and currently serves as a Rice County Commissioner.

Neuville and Peterson are running in a close race that could be decided by the votes of students at Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges.

The debate is hosted by The Lens Magazine, the award-winning student magazine of politics and culture at Carleton. Produced entirely by students, the magazine is in its second year of publication and is recognized by the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) as one of the top collegiate publications in the country. A story written by Miranda Blue ’06 for the inaugural issue was recently named a finalist for the ACP diversity Story of the Year.
