Businessman. Entrepreneur. Philanthropist. Built Sears, Roebuck into the world’s leading mail order firm and became one of the richest men in 1920s America. Co-founded the American Jewish Committee. Developed thousands of schools for African-Americans in the rural South. Created a fellowship whose recipients included Langston Hughes, Jacob Lawrence and Zora Neale Hurston. Treated his workers well. Spoke out for racial equality.

Julius Rosenwald’s resume is not just impressive, it’s downright inspiring. In honor of Black History Month, meet Rosenwald’s grandson, historian Peter Ascoli, who has published the first new biography of Rosenwald in half a century. He draws from never-before-discovered family papers and primary sources to paint a broad and compelling portrait of this extraordinary humanitarian. Julian Bond, Chairman of the NAACP, responds from a contemporary perspective.

Presented by the Washington DC Jewish Community Center. A Windows & Mirrors program co-sponsored by Howard University’s African American Resource Center, American Jewish Committee’s Washington Chapter, AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps, Jews United for Justice, Jewish Youth Philanthropy Institute and the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism.
