The way in which people interact with broadcast media is changing rapidly with a variety of feedback channels emerging. The Digital Communications Knowledge Transfer Network is organising an event on Friday 18th Feb, in collaboration with Queen Mary, University of London to explore where this phenomenon could go. Up to now, television broadcasting has largely been seen as a purely passive activity with the user having little or no say on how broadcast material is presented to them. However, the availability of increased bandwidth, with feedback channels from the user to the studio, together with new research in the fields of semantic tagging and automatic camera tracking, will allow users to have a much greater say on individualised production of the content. Ultimately, this will lead to the development of personalised broadcasting services over a variety of channels and networks provide possibilities for new forms of user experience and offer novel revenue generating services for both broadcasters and content providers.
