PERFORMANCE:Alicia Jo Rabins & Girls in Trouble November 17, 2011

Alicia Jo Rabins—Torah scholar, fem-folkie, punk maven—writes songs inspired by biblical heroines. Rabins, along with her group, Girls in Trouble, presents an intimate concert featuring the new album Half You Half Me, and debuts a world-premiere song about Hagar. Presented in conjunction with the installation of sculptor Jacques Lipchitz’s last monumental bronze, Hagar in the Desert, this original composition commissioned for the Museum is part of Rabins’ ongoing song cycle connecting stories of the Old Testament to women’s lives today.

Brooklyn-based musician and Torah scholar Alicia Jo Rabins is the frontwoman of Girls in Trouble, a group that has been part of New York’s underground Jewish art scene since their debut album was released on indie-Jewish music label Jdub Records, in 2009. The band began as Alicia's unusual Masters Thesis in Jewish Women's Studies at JTS, and grew into an internationally touring, critically acclaimed rock band who continue to interpret the stories of Torah women, bringing their often-overlooked stories to life in venues ranging from rock clubs in Brooklyn, NY to the Great Synagogue in Stockholm.
