Guangdong Modern Dance Company is mainland China’sfirst professional modern dance company. Internationally renowned forits exquisite and captivating performances, the company was founded inJune, 1992 under the auspices of the Department of Culture ofGuangdongProvince.Ms. Yang Mei-qi was appointed the first managingdirector, and Mr. Willy Tsao from Hong Kongwas invited to be the first artistic director for the company.Tsaoserved his term till 1998 but in 2004, he was invited again to be thedirector and artistic director of the company.

During the past decade, China’smodern dance has witnessed not only the growing of a company but therise of many sparkling stars. The Company’s dancers and choreographersQiao Yang, Shen Wei, Xing Liang, Sang Ji-jia, Li Han-zhong, YangYun-tao, Shi Xuan, Liu Qi, Long Yun-na etc., have gained internationalrecognition with their outstanding artistries.

GMDChas also hosted the annual Guangdong Modern Dance Festival since 2004.Besides presenting performances by international dance companies, thefestival also stages works by young independent dancers/dance groupsfrom all over China.In May 2005, it gathered more than 200 dancers from 13 cities andprovinces. Hailed as the nation’s cradle of modern dance, GMDCcontinues to cultivate new grounds for the promotion and development ofthe art in China.
