Pedal Power Engineering
with Andrew Rasmussen

This course will cover the basic design principles for pedal powered equipment including the following topics:
- direct mechanical drive vs electric
- flywheel design/benefits
- using a charge controller for preservation of battery and safety
- generator vs alternator
- reducing air resistance and torque resistance
- measuring output power

If you have parts that may be used to assemble a bike and want to assemble one during class let me know so I can give you a shopping list.

Basically we will need:
- an exercise bike with belt drive friendly wheel (preferably heavy flywheel , without fan)
- a dc motor/generator or alternator
- a pulley
- a belt
- wood for base

The class is from noon – 4:00pm and costs $20.

Class size is limited to 20 students.

Andrew Rasmussen’s Bio:
After completing an engineering degree, Andrew visited numerous IC’s including the Findhorn Foundation, Plum Village, Mitraneketan, Auroville, The Bruderhoff, Earthlands Institute, Sirius, Derbyshire Farm, Dancing Rabbit, Earthhaven, Gaia Yoga Gardens, and Quail Springs. In 1994 he worked in Sacramento for an edible landscaping company, maintaining a backyard mini-farm and installing organic vegetable gardens. After introducing employer Lisa to permaculture, a few months later she ended up marrying Bill Mollison! He has worked as an ecological engineer and technician, and has been a massage therapist for 13 years. In 2008, he completed an MA in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, with an emphasis in Consciousness, Health, and Healing. In 2009, he created the Gaia Sangha Eco-Healing Arts Commuity in Mar Vista, CA.
