I would like to bring to your attention an important issue and an upcoming event.

WHAT: Paula Deen Rally for Smithfield Workers
WHERE: 7th and L Streets NW (Outside the Washington Convention Center) Washington, DC
WHEN: Saturday, November 3, 10 a.m. to Noon

As out website states - http://www.smithfieldjustice.com/ - Poverty wages, brutal conditions, crippling injuries--5,500 workers in Tar Heel, North Carolina face this every day at the world's largest hog processing plant. Cited by Human Rights Watch for violating international human rights standards, Smithfield Packing has created an environment of intimidation, racial tension, and sometimes violence for workers who want a voice on the job.

Television celebrity chef Paula Deen is the public face of Smithfield Foods, and workers from Smithfield's Tar Heel plant have repeatedly asked her to meet with them, listen to their plight, and help them bring better safety and work conditions to their plant. Yet for months their requests have been ignored.

Three months ago, Paula made a promise on Larry King Live that she would meet with Smithfield workers on his show, but after the taping, her people still weren’t returning phone calls or letters from the workers.

On Saturday, November 3rd, Paula will be giving a cooking demonstration at the Washington Convention Center. This is our opportunity to stand alongside the Smithfield workers. Please join us, and let Paula and Smithfield know that the world is watching.

Please distribute this information to your email lists and help give a voice to the workers at Smithfield.
