Back by popular demand, Riverside Theatres is pleased to present Passionfruit as part of the 2009 Big Notes Music Series. This synthesis of musical styles results in a contemporary interpretation of jazz that is unique and uplifting.

Passionfruit is the work of contemporary jazz guitar virtuoso and composer, Guy Strazz. The performance of World jazz originals, music by Sting, AV Jobim and J Taylor crosses musical boundaries through harnessing styles from diverse musical cultures. Influences include Indian classical, Afro-Brazilian and traces of jazz. This fusion of driving rhythms, evocative melodies and improvisations create a textured and vibrant aural sensation.

Guy Strazz cites the diversity of the music as a core characteristic of Passionfruit. Italian born, Strazz studied at the NSW Conservatorium of Music and has performed at jazz festivals around the world.

“There’s a lot of spontaneity in our performances,” said Guy Strazz. “The tunes are a framework for us to expand upon so that each performance is unique and the audience is as much a part of this as are the players.”

Joining Strazz is pianist Matt McMahon, percussionist Rodrigo Galvao, Hugh Fraser on double bass and Wangaratta National Jazz award finalist and vocalist Edoardo Santoni.

“Passionfruit often collaborates with diverse musicians. This time, at Riverside, we look forward to embrace [sic] the sounds of vocalist Edoardo Santoni –a jazzy singer with a bright future” added Guy Strazz.
