James St. James discusses his new young adult novel Freak Show at Books Inc. in the Castro.

Inspired by his own experience, adult author ("Disco Bloodbath") and media personality James St. James makes his YA debut with this novel about a young drag queen who makes a grand entrance into a conservative high school.

Billy Bloom is gay, but it’s mostly theoretical, as he hasn’t had much experience. When he has to move to Florida, he can’t believe his bad luck. His new school is a mix of Bible Belles, Aberzombies, and Football Heroes, none of which are exactly his type. Billy’s efforts to fit in and stand out at the same time are both hilarious and heartrending. In this novel from adult author and media personality James St. James, readers are in for a wild ride as he tells Billy’s fascinating story of bravado, pain, and unexpected love, inspired by his own experiences.

About James St. James:
James St. James is the author of Disco Bloodbath, the Edgar Award nominated book that was later made into the movie Party Monster starring Macauley Culkin and Seth Green. Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a celebutante, James was one of the original Club Kids and has been a fixture on the nightlife scene on both coasts for over twenty years. Despite his busy social life, James manages to find time to contribute to the WoW Report and make numerous appearances on Americas Next Top Model, Tyra, and many other pop culture TV shows.

Books Inc. is a locally owned and operated independent bookseller with 10 locations in California. Books Inc.’s origin dates back to the Gold Rush Days of 1851 when Anton Roman struck it rich in Shasta City, California and set himself up in business selling books. That small bookstore was moved, bought, sold, burned, rebuilt, renamed and became Books Inc., as we know it today, in 1946.

Today, with 10 Stores and 200 employees, Books Inc. serves as a shining example that independent bookselling can survive and prosper, even if we must dance among the elephants.
