Panel discussion on Photography. Topics of Discussion: Where is the space for photography? Photography is part of the cultural heritage - where should it be preserved? Who is responsible for collecting photography and where? Or: who should be collecting photography and where? Would it be considerable to build up an archive/collection for contemporary photography as there are in some other countries? Panelists: Ute Eskildsen, Gayatri Sinha (Art Critic and Curator), Devika Daulat Singh (Director, Photoink Gallery), Sunil Gupta (Photographer), Radhika Singh (Director, Fotomedia) Moderator: Shukla Sawant (Visual Artist and Associate professor at School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU) About Ute Eskildsen Ute Eskildsen (b. 1947) studied photography and Photo-history at the Folkwang School of Design, Essen/Germany after she was educated in a Portrait and Fashion Studio. She worked first as freelance photographer and assistant to Otto Steinert. In 1973 she founded a Photography Gallery and started organizing numerous exhibitions of contemporary photography. In 1979 she became a full-time Curator of photography at Museum Folkwang, Essen, where she was asked to establish the photography department, and in 1991 she became the vice-director of the museum. She has been a member of several curatorial committees and encouraged young photographers by instituting several photography awards and fellowships. She was visiting curator at Busch- Reisinger Museum, Cambridge /USA and visiting scholar at Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles/USA. In 2000 Ute Eskildsen was conferred a professorship. Aside from numerous catalogue publications, she has also edited many books on different photographers and issues relating to photography. She has lectured at several national and international universities, photographic institutions, museums and festivals since 1979.
