Pamina Traylor: Reflections August 21, 2008

Sculpturesite Gallery presents Reflections, a solo exhibition of glass sculpture by Pamina Traylor, currently Adjunct Professor at the California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA, where she chaired the Glass Program in 1999-2000. In the fall of 2007, Traylor was invited to be a visiting faculty member of the Osaka University of Art, and she created the works in this exhibition in reaction to that experience. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 21st, from 5:30 to 7:30.

In Reflections, Traylor delves into her perceptions of the contemporary Japanese environments she enjoyed exploring on foot during her stay in a small town near Osaka. "Being of Japanese descent, I took this opportunity to explore my cultural heritage and experience Japanese culture firsthand," says Traylor. "I was impressed by the integral role nature and the seasons play in Japanese life."

New York art critic Donald Kuspit writes that Traylor's work is a reminder of "the erotic potential of glass." In this new series of single and multiple wall-hung works, one powerful pedestal piece and several larger installations, this erotic tension can be detected as a generous interpretation of the sensuality of nature Traylor saw manifested everywhere in Japan as an intrinsic part of the culture -the birth of rice shoots in the small paddies the artist saw tucked in the unlikeliest of places around town, the development of the shoots, the maturing of the crops, the harvesting of the rice.

Traylor's work is in private collections worldwide and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of American Glass, NJ; The Speed Art Museum, KY; Tittot Glass Art Museum, Taiwan; and Cam Ocagi, Istanbul.
