Thornton Wilder wrote the play
in 1938, a stripped down response to the tired work he saw on the Broadway
stage. He felt that:

"the
theatre was not only inadequate, it was evasive... The tragic had no heat; the comic had no bite; the social criticism failed to indict us with
responsibility".

Since then Our Town is never out of production in
the US, with its pared down poetic expression of small town life. It is a paen
to the world which was swept away by the Great War, but more than that he
attemprts to endow everyday life with a deeper spiritual significance: "to find
a value above all price in the smallest events in our daily life".
