Our Community Story is the film, video and installation art works of youth and mentoring artists who dedicated last summer to exploring the living history of the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood. Premiering this summer in the media arts community Our Community Story will be presented at Video In Studios, 1965 Main Street. This screening and installation will feature:

FOUR ON HASTINGS a film and audio documentary focusing on four unique businesses in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood: Olympia Tailors, Sorrento Barbers, Polonia Sausage House, and Wung Wo Tong Herbs & Acupuncture. Under the mentorship of artists Lea Moss and Pietro Sammarco, youth interns Emma Banks, Wendy Chen, Julie Jones, and Lucy MacKenzie have shot 16mm film footage and recorded audio interviews with the shopkeepers and their patrons.

STORIES OF THE WATERFRONT a time-based collage/stop-motion animation featuring stories about the history of the waterfront area of the Hasting-Sunrise Neighbourhood. Under the guidance of artists Maya Ersan and Louis Cruz, youth interns Dennis Pierre, Darnel Colby, Liv Kempkes, Max Knowlan, and Frank Pacheco have been listening to stories told by longshoremen, seamen, and longtime residents. Their hand-drawn stop motion will be layered with archival and current photos and audio clips.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF HASTINGS PARK a series of sound stations featuring soundscapes and stories about Hastings Park. Sculptural wall mounted Sound Stations stations will be installed at Video In Studios for this evening’s presentation. The table top at each station will feature a collage of archival imagery, photos, drawings and text that illustrate some of the stories on the accompanying menu. Each sound station focuses on a different topic: Playland and the PNE, Hastings Racecourse, Stories of Internment at Hastings Park, and Stories of the Neighbourhood. Mentoring artists for this project are Jaimie Robson and Igor Santizo, and youth interns are Karl Fousek, Camilo Porter, Bruce Macdonald, Mimi Li, and Mitchell Vong.

Artists Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson of Media Undefined organized and developed Our Community Story with several youth and mentoring artists last summer. This screening and installation was first presented last October in the Hasting-Sunrise neighbourhood.
