What if they gave a revolution and nobody came? What are the police to do if no one commits crimes? In 'The Police' the great Polish writer Slawomir Mrozek exercises his customary wit, steel-trap logic and deft theatricality as he develops this idea to hilarious and disturbing conclusions. When a highly efficient police force has suppressed all disloyalty to the government, it must manufacture fake political dissenters in order to secure the existence of the system. The outcome? Bureaucrats gone wild in a scathing comedy about the price we pay to maintain the status quo.
