A cult sensation of the West African music scene, this beloved band from Benin brings its fiercely funky sound to the U.S. For three decades, they have been playing their own Afrobeat version of a Motown review, while developing a huge canon of recorded music (over 500 songs), performing mainly in Nigeria, Ghana, and French West Africa. The band merges sounds made famous by Fela Kuti (with whom the band played in nearby Lagos), with traditional vodun (voodoo) rhythms, Ghanian highlife, Congolese rumba, Latin-tinged Cuban brass beats, and American funk with a heavy dose of James Brown.
