Friday Nights at the de Young: Cultural Encounters
Opening Night: Gilbert & George
Friday, February 15, 2008, 5:00–8:45 pm

Be among the first in the U.S. to experience the exhibition Gilbert & George at Friday Nights at the de Young Museum on February 15. This is the largest retrospective of Gilbert & George’s work ever organized by the Tate Modern in London, and the de Young is the first venue in a three-city U.S. tour. Gilbert & George provides an overview of the dynamic career of the acclaimed British duo, whose continuously innovative and challenging art has gained them wide recognition as two of the most important living artists on the international scene. Identifying as living sculptures in art and daily life, the artists eliminate the distinction between artist and art. There will be a docent tour of the exhibition at 7 pm. The program on February 15 features music by DJ Kristen Rice, a.k.a. “the Operator,” 6–7 pm; a spoken-word performance by Jello Biafra, 7–7:30 pm; and live music by Penelope Houston, former lead singer of the Avengers, 7:30–8:30 pm. San Francisco urban fairy and drag phenomenon, Fauxnique, will also join the celebration.

All galleries are open until 8:45 pm. Cocktails are available in Wilsey Court, and the de Young Café serves a special dinner menu, drinks, and appetizers on Friday Nights. Regular gallery admission prices apply on Friday Nights. Admission includes access to all festivities including live music and interactive art projects.
