The Las Cruces Museum of Art proudly presents “Looking Ahead: Portraits from the Mott-Warsh Collection,” The exhibition will be on display from December 3, 2010 to January 22, 2011.

“Looking Ahead” includes thirty contemporary portraits of people of African descent. The artists featured in this exhibition explore cultural perceptions and socio/political concepts in a variety of media. Artworks by renowned artists such as Romare Bearden, Chuck Close, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Elizabeth Catlett convey the personalities and moods of their subjects with stirring clarity. Several of the works are small, intimate pieces, while others are large in scale and domineering in their presence. The intent of the exhibition is to increase the viewer’s knowledge of 20th century American culture and the African Diaspora.

The Mott-Warsh Collection was created by Maryanne Mott and her husband the late Herman Warsh, with a focus on collecting works created by artists of the African Diaspora. The Collection includes artworks produced in the 20th and 21st centuries, covering a wide range of media from drawing to painting, prints to photography, and mixed media to sculpture.
