Opening: Friday, Nov 19, 5:30-8pm; exhibition runs through January 9th, 2011

"The red flowers of the flamboyant tree carry with them an inherent beauty as well as a past that includes rebellion, revolt, and emancipation. The land for me is a witness to the events that occur/occurred on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten, both trauma and healing. The Caribbean reality carries with it constantly evolving opposites that coexist on a daily basis. Beauty and tragedy live together in an uneasy harmony, but together nonetheless."

This exhibition includes two bodies of work, "Evidence" and "Bounty," both speaking to the complex history of St. Marteen, Jack's birthplace. The evocative images of the land speak to the complex intersection of place and memory, and the ways in which the landscape can, and cannot, hold social history.

In photography, painting, video/sound installation, and text, Deborah Jack deals with transcultural existence, memory, re-memory, and hurricanes. Jack received her MFA from SUNY Buffalo and currently teaches art at New Jersey City University. Her work has been exhibited internationally.

This exhibition will be on view on the 4th floor at CIIS' main building through January 9th, 2011.
