DREAMLAND (Þorfinnur GuÐnason, Iceland. 89 Minutes)

“What do you own when you have sold everything?” The Icelandic landscape is vast, beautiful and diverse: a natural wonder of the world. It is also threatened by industrialization. The people of Iceland used to believe they were among the richest in the world because they were not hungry, a belief that was rooted in their relationship with the land; but, as modern day Iceland struggles with debt and economic crisis, the country faces difficult choices about the future of their landscape. To some, international corporations, interested in exploiting the landscape for its resources, appear to offer relief to an economy in crisis, but to others the cost to the integrity of their environment seems far too high. Dreamland explores the double-edged sword of Iceland’s drive toward “progress”.
