Many scientists have agreed for decades that demand for resources has outstripped the Earth's power to renew, but they have been unable to quantify the problem. Wackernagel describes how ecological "footprints" - the amount of land needed to support a person's consumption - help governments and businesses measure the impact of their policies and could help us reverse our own unsustainable lifestyles.
