Elderly couple Ethel and Norman are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. Norman is a retired professor with heart palpitations and a failing memory who remains as tart-tongued, observant, and eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger and a perfect opposite, delights in all the small things that continue to enrich their long life together. During their summer stay, the two receive a visit from their divorced, middle-aged daughter - somewhat estranged from her curmudgeonly father - who brings along her fiance and his teenage son.
