Mark your calendars for Monday, January 29 at 7:00pm for the first Science Pub of 2007:

The Stem Cell Debate: Science, Ethics and Public Policy
with Lisa Sardinia, Associate Professor of Biology at Pacific University http://pacificu.edu/as/biology/faculty/sardinia.cfm

Embryonic stem cell research has been an extremely divisive topic that needs sustained, thoughtful conversation to be able to develop sound public policy. To enter into such a conversation, it is vital to understand the basic biological concepts of early human embryonic development, the current state of technology with respect to embryo manipulation, and the prospects for use of embryonic stem cells. Dr. Sardinia will explore questions surrounding the ethical limits of embryo manipulation, and how concrete results of advances in stem cell technology can be distributed in a time of limited resources.

Just what is the Science Pub anyway?
The Science Pub http://www.omsi.edu/education/adults/ is a monthly event where you can find out about advances in science and technology from leading researchers and scientists, all while enjoying food and beverages. Don't expect a remote speaker behind a distant podium. Instead, experience the informal atmosphere where you can interact with the expert and where there are no silly questions. No scientific background is required; just bring your curiosity, sense of humor, and appetite for food, drinks, and knowledge!

The Science Pub is open to anyone and everyone, no RSVP is necessary. Please feel free to pass this on to your friends and colleagues, and we hope to see you there!

For a list and description of upcoming Science Pubs in February, March, and April 2007, please visit: http://www.omsi.edu/education/adults/
