Join us at the OMSI Science Pub at Mission Theater to hear about:

"The Hidden Ring of Fire: Exploring Undersea Volcanoes in the Western Pacific"
with Bill Chadwick, PhD
Tuesday, May 26
7:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
Mission Theater & Pub, 1624 NW Glisan, Portland http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=72&id=168
Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Come early for food and drinks!

The Ring of Fire roughly traces the outline of the Pacific Ocean and is home to the most active string of volcanoes and earthquake faults in the world. Some features of this geologically dynamic landscape are obvious, such as Mt. Hood and the rest of the Cascade volcanoes, the San Andreas fault, and the recently active Mt. Redoubt in Alaska. But the Ring of Fire doesn’t stop at the ocean’s edge, it includes whole chains of underwater volcanoes that are hidden from view. At this Science Pub we will hear about expeditions to the depths of the western Pacific, view images of strange, newly discovered species of marine life, and watch amazing video footage of undersea volcanic eruptions.

Bill Chadwick, PhD, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/vents/staff/chadwick.html is an associate professor at the OSU Cooperative Institute for Marine Resources Studies. He is a prominent geologist who studies active volcanoes, both on land and underwater. He has worked in the Cascades, Hawaii, New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands, as well as on submarine volcanoes in the northeast and western Pacific. His main interest is learning about how volcanoes work and how they affect their environment, particularly marine hydrothermal systems and associated biological communities.

Science Pub is open to anyone and everyone; no RSVP is necessary. Science Pub is very well attended, so get there early! Tell your friends. We hope to see you there!

Please note: Science Pub Portland now has a suggested cover charge of $2.00. (If that's a hardship for you, please come anyway!)
