Once home to the rich and powerful, the northern area of the Lower East Side changed as waves of immigrants arrived during the 19th century and turned the area into a hotbed of radical political thought, birthplace to the counter-culture, and a center for the arts. Abraham Lincoln, James Fenimore Cooper, Yoko Ono and Dee Dee Ramone—they were all here. See footprints left by Joan Crawford.
