As powerful and timely today as when it was first produced on Broadway in 1937, John Steinbeck’s classic play Of Mice and Men is a moving, heart-wrenching and profoundly beautiful tale of love and oppression, isolation and friendship. For George and Lennie, two disenfranchised wanderers in California during the Great Depression, daily life is a struggle. They have one simple dream – a home of their own, where they might raise rabbits – but something happens, and they tumble into unstoppable tragedy. The story and the viscerally affecting language Steinbeck uses to tell it remain controversial; the novella is required reading in schools around the world, but is also censored in many others, appearing on the American Library Association's list of the Most Challenged Books of 21st Century. One of the great classics of American literature AND a great classic of the American stage, Of Mice and Men is considered to be a significant factor in Steinbeck's Nobel Prize in literature.
The production will include the use of historic photography from some of America’s best-known visual chroniclers (such as Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans) and popular folk music of the era from artists including Blind Alfred Reed, The Graham Brothers, and The Bentley Boys. The actors include Ian Armstrong as Carlson; Luke Armstrong as Whit; Nathan Dunkin as Slim; Emery John Frazier as Crooks; Cassie Greer as Curley's Wife; David Heath as The Boss; Peter Schuyler as George; Adam Syron as Curley; Edward Williams as Candy; and Colin Wood as Lennie.
Directed by B&B Artistic Director Scott Palmer, our version promises to be both visually and emotionally stunning.
