"The Improbable Reign of Norton I, Emperor of the United States"
From Seattle - Salt Horse
"This was a cliff"

ODC Theater Artist in Residence Catherine Galasso shares the bill with Seattle's Salt Horse for an evening of dance that will transport you into a dream world.

Galasso explores the life of Joshua Norton, the beloved San Francisco eccentric who in 1859 crowned himself "Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico." "The Improbable Reign" is a dreamlike and humorous portrait of Norton as a multifaceted metaphor, and will reflect on hope, failure, and sanity, as well as on a rich forgotten history of San Francisco. Follow along as this new work is being created: http://nortondance.blogspot.com/

"Galasso is particularly skillful in establishing an ominous mood, only to subvert it and shake the audience with uneasy humor."- Beatrice Barbareschi, www.culturebot.org, New York

Dancers are:
Christine Bonansea, Marina Fukushima, Phoenicia Pettyjohn, Julie Sheetz
and Andrew Wass

"This was a cliff" follows two characters, one dense and one hollow, as they traverse a room, a forest, and a wormhole to reveal their separate fates. A voice becomes water, bodies fly, crumble and morph and sets quietly vanish. Layering intricate choreography and sound with improvisational scoring, sculptural scenery and film work, "This was a cliff" is a playful and dark look at petrification and evolution. "This was a cliff...implied a dream narrative - unbalanced, yet never faltering in its secretive arc, amusing...and finally, shocking"
- Merilyn Jackson, The Philadelphia Inquirer
