Ocean Acidification with Professor Andrew Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego March 16, 2011

Andrew Dickson is a professor of marine chemistry in the Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego (UCSD). His research focuses on improving our understanding of the chemistry of carbon dioxide in seawater, and its effects on marine organisms through the process known as ocean acidification. He has played a key role in providing quality control for oceanic carbon dioxide measurements.
The oceans have absorbed 30% of the carbon dioxide that humans have ever produced and they absorb more each year. This force-feeding has changed ocean chemistry in ways that affect the organisms that live in the ocean. The changes make it harder for many organisms to form their shells; In this talk, Prof. Dickson will describe both what we know about this emerging problem and what we wish we knew!
