Carleton College?s annual observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be marked with a candlelight service of remembrance and celebration led by the Rev. Oliver White on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. in Skinner Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

White is the senior pastor of St. Paul?s Grace Community United Church of Christ. He has served the church, the only African American congregation in the UCC Minnesota conference, for 15 years. He also spent two terms as chair of the St. Paul Black Ministerial Alliance. White considers himself a social activist. ?I like to see the waters of justice rolling down,? he says.

White?s first contact with Carleton came in the 1980s, when the late Senator Paul Wellstone, then a Carleton political science professor, invited White to speak to his classes. White returned to Wellstone?s classes several times and then spoke at the first of many Carleton annual MLK observances. ?I consider the invitation to speak at Carleton one of my highest honors,? he says.

The Carleton choirs and the student vocal group Intertwining Melodies will provide music for the service.
