Oakland East Bay Symphony wraps up its dynamic 2011-2012 season with "Do That Voodoo" on Friday, May 18, at 8 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. Daniel Bernard Roumain-composer, violinist and band-leader-blends his Haitian roots with classical and techno textures. Bay Area favorites Paula West and Taylor Eigsti and guest drummer Eric Harland add a jazz element to the evening, with West performing a set backed by orchestra and Eigsti presenting the world premiere of his new work for jazz piano and orchestra. An engaging pre-concert talk by John Kendall Bailey begins at 7 p.m.

Roumain's Voodoo Violin Concerto is a twenty-five-minute concerto for orchestra and violin and features a drum kit and hip-hop/jazz beats throughout. Fun and fiercely funky, the concerto allows the solo violinist to showcase the dexterity of the instrument. The work was originally commissioned by The Kitchen House Blend in 2002 for a chamber ensemble, but Roumain arranged it for full orchestra at the behest of the Vermont Youth Orchestra in 2006.
