The Corvinus University of Budapest and the International Potash Institute (IPI) have the pleasure to invite you to participate in the International Symposium on “Nutrient Management and Nutrient Demand of Energy Plants”.

The International Potash Institute is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation that is supported by the potash industries in Europe and the Near East. IPI’s mission is to develop and promote balanced fertilization for the production of higher yields and more nutritious food, together with ensuring sustainability of production through the conservation of soil fertility for future generations.

The Faculty of Horticultural Science is one of the seven faculties of Corvinus University of Budapest. The history of the faculty began in 1853 and became one of the prominent places of European horticultural teaching during the last 150 years. It is the consequence of the fact, that Hungarian society always gave a high priority to the training of agricultural specialists. The Faculty played an important and traditional role in formation of number of special horticultural regions of Hungary, appreciated worldwide. The activity of professors and research-workers contributed in a great deal to the development of such regions as Tokaj, specialized for wine production, Szeged and Kalocsa, which are known for its spice pepper production, or the eastern regions of Hungary, which produce number of delicious fruits. The task was as well to contribute to the development of the ornamental and medicinal plant sectors. The Hungarian horticulture, as a whole, supported by the knowledge and education system, produced high quality food-products, which are known as “Hungaricum” worldwide.

The fossil energy resources are limited. Renewable energy seems to be an alternative. Various field and tree crops are suitable to be cultivated as a source for production of bio energy. Many conferences deal with technical aspects of bio gas, bio ethanol or bio diesel production and the set up of block heat and power plants to produce electricity as well as heat. The necessity to grow crops with specific quality parameters for feeding these plants is often overlooked. The International Potash Institute in cooperation with Corvinus University of Budapest intends to arrange an international symposium on nutrient management and nutrient demand of energy plants.

The main topics of the symposium will be addressed in four sessions:

1. New and traditional crops for bio energy
2. Quality requirement of crops for bio energy
3. Optimal crop rotation and nutrient balance for bio energy plants
4. Energy and CO2 balance of crops grown for bio energy

Each session will be opened by a keynote speaker, followed by thematically corresponding lectures of 20 minutes. Besides the regular paper presentations we plan to have a poster session on the themes of the symposium. Only papers and posters in English are accepted.
