TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
1962 35MM 129MIN
DIR Robert Mulligan SCR Horton Foote, based on the novel by Harper Lee
CAST Gregory Peck, Mary Badham, Phillip Alford, Robert Duvall, Brock Peters

Seen through the eyes of Scout, a feisty six-year-old tomboy, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is an odyssey amid the fires of prejudice and injustice in 1932 Alabama. Presenting her tale first as a sweetly lulling reminiscence of events from her childhood, the narrator draws us in with stories of her daring neighborhood exploits with her brother Jem and their friend Dill. Peopled with eccentrics, the town of Maycomb finds itself the venue for the trial of Tom Robinson, a young black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Atticus Finch, Scout and Jem's widowed father and a man of deep principles, is appointed to defend Tom for whom a guilty verdict from an all-white jury is a foregone conclusion. Juxtaposed against the story of the trial is the children's hit-and-run relationship with Boo Radley, a shut-in who the children and Dill's Aunt Stephanie suspect is insane and who no one has seen in ages. Although hidden treasures, found in the knothole of a tree near the ramshackle Radley house, temper the children's judgment of Boo, their fear keeps them at a distance. Then, on their way home one night, the children are saved from an evil born of ignorance and hate in a way that changes their lives forever.
