Swan Lake is among the most popular and enduring of all classical ballets. The story resonates with romance, mystery and heartbreaking betrayal. The music is considered by many to be Tchaikovsky’s loveliest score, and it is said that the great composer may have had more than a little to do with the libretto as well. Act II is the heart of the story. In it, Prince Siegfried meets the Swan Queen, Odette. She tells the Prince that she is really a Princess who has been turned into a bird by an evil sorcerer. The spell can only be broken when a man whose heart is pure pledges his love to her. As they dance, she becomes more and more human and the Prince falls in love. Just as he about rescue Odette, the sorcerer appears and whisks her away. The other swans dance upon the lake, preventing the Prince from following, and soon Siegfried is alone again by the side of Swan Lake.
