In this course we will undertake a comprehensive study of Friedrich Nietzsches life, times and philosophy. The course will unfold in three parts: firstly we will approach his philosophy through a biographical study of his personal relationships and with movements such as Romanticism. We will also examine the historical roots of Nihilism and the political ideas which were emerging in both Germany and Russia based on nihilistic attitudes. In the second section we will read selections from Nietzsches early, middle and late works. We will see the development of his ideas and grapple with his complex, poetic/philosophical style. In the third section we will cover critical material on Nietzsche: his relationship to Asian thought; his relationship to American literature; and the case against Nietzsche.
