"Take an inside look at subway substations with photographer Chris Payne. In New York's Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind the Subways, Payne documents the machine-age masterpieces that once powered the subway. The substations were in operation for almost a century, hidden behind unassuming historic facades across the city. In 1999, the last substation was shut down, and since then many have been dismantled. With virtually unlimited access, Payne rushed to document these historic structures before they completely disappeared, and in the process developed an intimate knowledge of the buildings that most people don't even recognize in their own neighborhood."

The talk and slide lecture will take place on Tuesday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, between Bleecker and West 3rd Streets. Admission is $10, $5 for students with I.D. All proceeds benefit OHNY. For information, contact us at [email protected].
