at 7 p.m. EASY LIVING (Mitchell Leisen, US 1937, 86 min.), then at 8:45 p.m. REMEMBER THE NIGHT (Mitchell Leisen, US 1940, 94 min.):

Before popping the champagne, join us for a sparkling double feature of classy comedies from Hollywood’s golden age, both written by the legendary Preston Sturges and directed by underrated craftsman Mitchell Leisen. In the screwball gem Easy Living, Jean Arthur plays a working-class girl who gets a face full of fur when a fed-up financier (Edward Arnold) throws his wife’s sable coat out the window. Soon, she finds romance in the arms of the rich man’s son (Ray Milland). Then, in Remember the Night, Barbara Stanwyck stars as a chronic shoplifter and Fred MacMurray is the prosecutor who takes her home for the holidays to keep her out of jail. Her encounter with the lawyer’s wholesome family, culminating on a memorable New Year’s Eve, begins to change her perspective on a life of crime.
