New Photo Centre Exhibit Takes A Panoramic View Of Joseph Meehan’s Works November 19, 2008

From the staid and traditional to the creative and dynamic – that’s how far Joseph Meehan has helped take panoramic photography.

Once used primarily to record large groups or historic events, panoramic images are now found in fine art collections and commercial publications. A pioneer in panoramic photography since the 1970s, Meehan has been at the forefront of innovation.

In a Palm Beach Photographic Centre exhibit, The Panoramic Eye of Joseph Meehan, Meehan demonstrates the range of modern panoramic photography in dramatic landscapes, portraits and other subjects taken for both commercial and fine art purposes. The exhibit, on display from November 19, 2008 through January 10, 2009 will feature 40 of Meehan’s color, black and white and toned infrared photographs created using both panoramic film cameras and digital techniques. An opening reception will be held on Nov. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Centre, 55 NE Second Ave. in Delray Beach, and is free and open to the public.

During the past 30 years, large, modified-view panoramic cameras have been replaced by smaller, more mobile cameras. In addition, digital stitching software has made it possible to digitally combine individual photographs into panoramic views. The result has been a major and dynamic expansion in panoramic subject matter and style.

Meehan has written 25 books on photography, including the first ever written on panoramic techniques. His images have been published in books, magazines, newspapers and Web sites nationally and internationally. His style has been described by The New York Times as “ . . . alive with color and sparkling with light.”

Meehan served as the senior technical editor of Photo District News magazine and is the former editor of the Photography Yearbook, published in Great Britain.
